Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome: Causes and Solutions

Piriformis syndrome may sound complex, but if you’ve experienced it before, you know it can be painful, too. This condition stems from the piriformis muscle deep, which runs from your gluteal region down the outside of the leg to below the knee. This muscle can become irritated and apply pressure to the nearby sciatic nerve. Piriformis pain can feel like a dull ache in the buttock, leading to discomfort, pain, and even tingling sensations down your leg. Pain can affect all areas of your daily life, including sleeping, sitting, and moving about.

At MVPT, we’re dedicated to helping you get to the root of your piriformis pain and, most importantly, how to find relief and resume what matters most to you!

What is Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis syndrome can be a bothersome condition. But with the proper care, including the services provided by your physical therapist, you can conquer it.

Several factors contribute to piriformis syndrome, including:

  • Muscle Tension and Tightness: When your piriformis muscles are overworked or tight, they can compress the sciatic nerve, triggering pain.
  • Trauma: Injury to the area, such as falls or accidents, can inflame the piriformis muscle.
  • Structural Differences: Some individuals have unique hip and muscle structures that make them more susceptible.

Certain factors can make you more vulnerable to piriformis syndrome, including:

  • Inactive Lifestyle: Spending extended periods sitting can increase your risk. The more you sit, the easier it is for your muscles to become tight.
  • Getting Older: Our muscles become less flexible as we age, making us more prone to this condition.
  • Overuse Strains: Athletes and those with jobs involving repetitive motions may face a higher risk.

The good news? Our highly skilled team at MVPT understands precisely how to help you get to the source of your discomfort, provide services to relieve the pain, and educate you on the tools you will need for long-term relief!

How MVPT Can Relieve Your Pain

With the trusted guidance of your physical therapist, you won’t have to navigate piriformis syndrome on your own. At MVPT, we’re committed to being a member of your team, putting you at the center of your care. We prioritize your overall health, not just the pain leading to our care. After completing your care plan, we also ensure you know how to maintain your improved well-being.

Our experienced physical therapists will assess your condition and create a personalized treatment plan. While your care will be customized specifically to your needs, some physical therapy services include:

  • Flexibility Exercises: Our physical therapists will guide you through specific stretching exercises to reduce pain and tightness in the piriformis muscle. Stretching can enhance flexibility and reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Strengthening Exercises: Building strength in the surrounding muscles can provide support and stability. Your therapist will design a tailored strengthening program to enhance your function and reduce discomfort.
  • Hands-on Care: Manual therapy methods, including soft tissue mobilizations and myofascial release, can help relax tight muscles and reduce inflammation. Manual therapy can be especially beneficial in releasing tension in the piriformis muscle.
  • Patient Education: Understanding how to manage and prevent piriformis syndrome is vital. Your therapist will educate you about the condition, its triggers, and lifestyle adjustments to help prevent recurrences.

You’ll receive a personalized home exercise program to empower you to maximize the benefits of your hard work.
